Why Mulch Depth and Placement Actually Matter
It is easy to assume mulch installation is just a matter of spreading material across a bed, but depth and placement have a real impact on plant health. Mulch piled too thick, or piled directly against plant stems and tree trunks, traps moisture against the bark and can lead to rot or pest issues over time. Too thin, and it fails to suppress weeds or retain soil moisture the way it should. We calculate appropriate depth per bed rather than applying a uniform layer everywhere regardless of what is planted there.
Material choice matters too. Different mulch types break down at different rates and serve slightly different purposes, from moisture retention in sun-exposed beds to aesthetic consistency along front-facing borders. We select material based on what each specific bed needs and how it will read against the rest of your property's landscaping.
Refreshing Beds Without Burying What Is Already There
Many properties accumulate old, compacted mulch layer after layer over multiple seasons without it ever being properly refreshed. That buildup can actually work against plant health, preventing water and air from reaching the soil underneath. Where needed, we address old compacted material before installing a fresh layer, rather than simply adding more on top of a problem that already exists.
We also pay close attention to edge definition during installation, since clean, defined bed borders are often what makes mulch work read as finished and intentional rather than just material that was dumped and roughly spread.
